Victory Grill is a historic music venue located at 1104 E. 11th St, Austin, Texas. The nightclub was on the Chitlin’ Circuit and hosted famous African American acts such as Bobby Bland, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, W. C. Clark and B. B. King when Austin was legally segregated. Victory Grill was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 16, 1998.

About Our History

1945

Founding!

Johnny Holmes opens the Victory Grill on Victory over Japan Day as a restaurant and bar for black soldiers returning from WWII.

The first incarnation is a small “lean-to” building, later moved to a larger building next door.

1950s:

 Musical Heyday

Victory Grill becomes known for its music, attracting music lovers of all races.

Hosted famous acts including Ike & Tina Turner, James Brown, Etta James, Billie Holiday, Chuck Berry, and Janis Joplin.

The area around Victory Grill becomes a bustling hub, likened to New Orleans.

1952

Lease

Johnny Holmes leases out Victory Grill while traveling to West Texas and Alaska.

1965

Return and Closure

Holmes returns to find the area in decline due to integration and the end of the Chitlin’ Circuit. The nightclub portion closes in the mid-1970s due to declining attendance, but the restaurant remains open.

1987

Brief Revival

1987 A large reunion bash on Juneteenth weekend revives the Victory Grill with music and former patrons.

1988

Fire and Closure

1988 Victory Grill closes after suffering major fire damage on October 10.

1995-1996

Restoration and Reopening

Restoration efforts by R.V. Adams begin in 1995. The Victory Grill re-opens in 1996, initiating a cultural rebirth of the area.

October 16, 1998

National Recognition

Victory Grill is added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Present Day

Cultural Landmark

Victory Grill stands as one of the last original Chitlin’ Circuit juke joints. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and archived by the Texas Historical Commission.

Dubbed a “Texas Treasure” by Preservation Texas. Serves southern cuisine, hosts blues, jazz, and urban contemporary entertainment, and offers educational opportunities.

Venue is open for private events, educational opportunities, and cultural tourism.
